Beschrijving
This book is a joyous celebration of 40 years of global expeditions to track down and document professionally the last steam locomotives of the world. The result has been a matchless legacy of pictures of the end of the age of steam.
Colin’s work is authentic. There are no preserved or tourist revival scenes in the pages of this book, just working locomotives in their natural – and sometimes spectacular – environment. And in a world where working steam locomotives are vanishing almost by the week, these pictures are unrepeatable; they represent a moment in history now gone forever.
Lost Leviathans is the finest visual tribute to the steam locomotive ever produced. It is a book of great beauty set amid some of the most memorable landscapes in the world; a book that will appeal to all who have ever loved steam trains and appreciate the breath-taking photography of a true artist.
Colin Garratt – ‘the David Attenborough of the steam locomotive’ – has written and illustrated over fifty books, mostly based on his expeditions to document the world’s last working steam locomotives. This unique odyssey has been a constant race against time as railway steam power heads towards extinction.
In addition to writing books and travelling, Colin Garratt is the director of Milepost 92 ½, which houses the world’s finest railway picture library. Milepost is a team of talented individuals offering a picture library and photographic service to the railway industry in addition to cataloguing and conserving photographic collections on behalf
of individuals. The company also has a vigorous publishing division.
Colin Garratt lives with his Chinese wife Lui Yanchun and his five children in a Georgian farmhouse in Leicestershire, situated alongside milepost 92 ½ on Britain’s Midland Main Line, and overlooking the bridge from which Colin watched his first trains as a child of nine.
