When joining British Railways in June 1962 Keith had no particular interest in either railways or, more pertinently steam locomotives, it being “just a job involving timetables”. It quickly became apparent, however, that the people he was to work with, Bill being amongst them, had been “guided” by his many enthusiastic colleagues as he began recording the rapidly changing scene by making notes and taking photographs. From 1964 and increasingly, over the remaining 4½ years of BR steam, he travelled the length and breadth of Britain making use of the free and reduced rate ticket arrangements associated with his employment. BR was “running out of steam” by 1968 and once again Bill came to his rescue – suggesting they go “chasing the Iron Horse” throughout Europe. Initially despairing that his personal objective, that of travelling with 1,000 different steam locomotives, was never going to be achieved, this now perhaps became a reality. This book is the story of that 20,000 mile/13 month chase.
