Beschrijving

Research clearly demonstrates that development- induced displacement and resettlement displaces millions annually and usually risks impoverishing people. In most cases, it is usually the government that plans, funds and executes development activities aimed at improving resettlement outcomes, yet the possible contribution of other organizations, such as Non- Governmental Organizations have not been adequately understood. This book, on the role in NGOs in improving resettlement outcomes, aims at exemplifying how such organizations can complement the work of the government. In a detailed study, which is against the backdrop of the pioneering long term studies of Kariba resettlement by Elizabeth Colson and Thayer Scudder, the author examines the impact of an NGO's development interventions coming along and influencing the on-going involuntary community resettlement process among the least researched group of the Gwembe Tonga, i.e. the people of Simamba Chiefdom in Zambia. The people of Simamba Chiefdom are part of those indigenous Africans that were displaced and subsequently resettled following the construction of the Kariba hydropower dam on the Zambezi River.
