The period shortly after 1950 marked something of a watershed in American life as the majority of Americans became suburbanites for the first time in history.

Transportation, especially high-speed interregional highways, opened up the countryside for metropolitan development. The result of this growth and development has been a wholesale transformation of American metropolitan life, in which traditional concepts of community, civil place, and neighborhood have been either overrun or severely threatened.

In spite of these radical changes, however, little serious attention has been paid to the contemporary suburban-metropolitan phenomenon within either the design professions or the academic setting of design schools.

Fortunately, the work of Duany and Plater-Zyberk is a conspicuous exception to this pattern of neglect and has almost single-handedly served to recenter discussion of American urbanism towards a broader consideration of metropolitan development. What follows in this volume is the first compilation of their town planning efforts, including documentation of their unusual, on-site 'charrette' process.
